G&C Summer 2017

June 18
First and foremost, happy father’s
day! I, personally am not a father (and Chot is neither a mother…YET) but
considering every eighteenth of June is fathers day why not take a few lines of
text to congratulate those responsible for 0.50% of the “work” that goes into
procreation.
We
started the day by having breakfast in town at the Bunnery. While waiting for a
table, I took the liberty to call my dad in which we talked for a short while
about father’s day, films we’ve seen, books we’ve read, and films and books we
wanted to read in the future. As our conversation wrapped our party was finally
granted access to the restaurant; it was tiny (borderline cramped) but carried
a homey atmosphere one can’t help but be drawn to. Charlotte, her brother Jim,
and I sat with Tim (father of the siblings) and we all had variations of eggs
Benedicts.
After
stuffing ourselves silly we rejoined the rest of our group, which consisted of
Charlotte’s mother, Sally, her two friends, and a family friend (Lisa) visiting
from Sweden. We spent the next couple hours touring and shopping in the Jackson
Hole Township where my sweetheart used the $50 given to her by the mysterious
cowboy of Elko to get me my first western hat. At first it felt a tad silly but
that also came with the staggering sensation of rugged masculinity. The kind
you might feel watching a badass spaghetti western or just by gazing into Clint
Eastwood’s hyper-intense face. The party then made a quick stop to the local
liquor store and loaded up with enough booze to make a sea captain blind and
headed to what we will be calling “home,” for the next week.
R lazy S is a dude ranch that the
Herbert family has been using as their annual vacation spot for years; a
“dude-ranch” for those unversed in the ways of horseback ridding is a kind of
resort for horse lovers of all colors; where one is assigned a gelding or mare
and is given the freedom to take our their beast on the open range (with a
skilled wrangler accompanying, of course).
I
was fortunate enough to have been invited to this particular haven last summer
at this time and to be honest I didn’t quite “get it,” at first. But sure
enough all it took was one ride out in Yellowstone/Grand Teton country and all
of sudden All the Pretty Horses, made sense. Needless to say everyone’s
excited for their first ride tomorrow.
The
rest of the evening’s activities consisted of cocktails and mingling with the
other temporary-ranchers we would be riding with throughout the week. Not much
else to report, but considering the unexpected lengthiness of the last two
posts that may not be such a terrible thing.
